Sl.No. Title Abstract Objectives Type Sponsors
Information Systems in Bangalore Traffic Information Systems in Bangalore Traffic Management By 2010, Bangalore city roads had become increasingly congested due to the rapid growth in the city population. Due to the presence of IT companies, it was one of the most sought after cities in India with well paid job opportunities. With the rising floating population in the city, Bangalore traffic also grew multifold over the years. Traffic pressure in Bangalore was more pronounced due to the fact that there was very little scope for expansion of roads and there was the need to use existing roads for smooth movement of vehicles. City planners and traffic police were not equipped well to address this issue. At this juncture, Bangalore City Traffic Police envisaged the “Bangalore Traffic Improvement Project – BTRAC 2010” which was the first of its kind project in the country to address the issues of traffic congestion safety etc utilizing the latest traffic management technology. The traffic police used information systems in an effective manner in traffic management. Government owned Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) adopted information systems in sharing of data with the citizens of Bangalore. The objective of this case study is to show how information systems could be used by the traffic police to connect with the citizens and also to monitor the traffic offenders and Expedia the fine collection process. Apart from learning the concepts of information systems and databases, students would benefit from the application of the same in a government organization. - Lakshmi lyer Key words: information systems, traffic management, Bangalore police, BMTC, government, traffic pressure, Bangalore traffic, traffic management technology, BTRAC 2010, City planning Case
NON DEMOGRAPHIC SEGMENTATION POSITIONING IN COMMODITY MARKET Indian dairy industry comprises of both organised and unorganised sector. Organised sector is again categorised into dairy co-operatives promoted by State Governments and private sector dairies. Up to 70% of the milk market is unorganised where milk is sold loose in cans and measuring cup by vendors. After the milk revolution, India has become the largest milk producer in the world. However, the supply of milk is not able to cope up with the demand. Due to consumer awareness about health, hygiene and added factor of economic affluence packaged milk is expected to be the future of dairy industry. Milk consumers do not have a preference for any particular brand as milk is a commodity. The case study explores the possibility of non-demographic segmentation in the milk packaging attempted by Cream Line Dairy Products Limited (CDPL), a private dairy which would help the company in positioning itself as a unique brand. The case observes that the milk pouches package designing led to segmentation positioning of the brand Jersey from CDPL with respect to varying fat content in the milk. Keywords: commodity, consumer preference, dairy co-operative, packaging, segmentation Case PESIT MBA
Will Convenience Overshadow Love and Care? By 2015, the global market for hot beverages (coffee and tea) is forecasted to reach 10.57 million tons in volume (GIA, 2010). Tea is known to be the second most consumed drink in the world surpassed only by water. This increase in demand for tea is due to the fact that it is the most popular and low cost beverage in the world. The process of preparation of tea in a tea pot was lengthier which was done in a leisurely fashion using loose tea. This indicated a flavour of affection, love and belongingness in the tea drinking session among the members. When guests came in, the host felt the effort put in preparation by this method showed more affection towards the visitors. (Shane, 2012) Easy storage, less messy, less soggy, ease of use and disposal, time saving and allowing one to carry on with their work without stopping are few of the convenience factors associated with preparation of tea using tea bags. (Lemm) With the advent of fast paced life worldwide, the tea bag segment even though being of insignificant percentage is set to grow substantially due to the convenience offered. In addition to the convenience factor extended to the consumer with respect to tea bags the tea industry also enjoys a huge value addition on marketing tea bags to the consumer. It is a win – win for both the consumer and industry! Drawing a parallel to the Indian market/consumers, tea market in India holds a huge potential to be exploited by the tea industry. The penetration of tea bags has not been encouraging. The opportunities existing for the manufacturers in terms of value addition and the consumers in terms of convenience and health benefits are high. This case study discusses about the changing tea consuming habits of the current generation in the face of other ready to drink (RTD) beverages. Case
Bottlenecks in Yard Management at SABMiller India The case is about the challenge faced by SABMiller India in its brewery at Sanga Reddy, Andhra Pradesh in its bottle yard. The company had to deploy processes and systems to streamline the process of bringing used bottles into the yard. Crating process in which used bottles were shifted from crates to trucks had to be organized. Used bottles had to be cleaned and processed for refilling of beer. SABMiller India was the second market leader in the beer industry. SAB Miller had to find a quick solution due to the approaching summer months when beer sales were expected to peak. Process involved truck movement within the facility and man power involvement in the operations. Systems were to be created to reduce the usage of trucks for transport within the facility and identification of non-value added activities during the transport process. Overall, SAB wanted to bring in process optimization by minimizing costs and maximizing efficiency. Teaching Objectives: 1. To understand and gain familiarity with 5S and FIFO concepts. 2. To identify bottlenecks in a yard through cause and effect diagram in a given situation. 3. To apply theoretical concepts to handle a real time issue and find solution in the field of operations. 4. To learn about facility planning in handling bottles in a yard. 5. To understand the process layout while handling bottles in a yard. Case The Case Center
Bottlenecks in Yard Management at SABMiller India(A) - Teaching Note Teaching Objectives: 1. To understand and gain familiarity with 5S and FIFO concepts. 2. To identify bottlenecks in a yard through cause and effect diagram in a given situation. 3. To apply theoretical concepts to handle a real time issue and find solution in the field of operations. 4. To learn about facility planning in handling a huge yard. 5. To understand the process layout while handling bottles in a yard. The case can be taught in courses such as ?Operations Management?, ?Materials Management?, ?Warehouse Management?, ?Lean Manufacturing? or ?Facilities Planning?. Through the case study, students would learn the concept of process layout. As organizations are embracing lean planning solutions in warehouse management and production facilities, the case would help the students understand the concept from an application view point. Student must be guided/trained in the application process of operations concepts while handling a business scenario as the discussion and the activity would require this knowledge. Note
