Message from the HOD

The Department of Physics and Electronics, CHRIST (Deemed to be University), established in 1969, has consistently set benchmarks in quality higher education through its well-equipped classrooms and advanced experimental laboratories. The Department is supported by a team of well-qualified and highly experienced faculty members who are actively engaged in research across frontier areas such as experimental condensed matter physics, materials science, and astrophysics.

Research in materials and energy sciences focuses on the development of nanomaterials, thin films, and polymers, with applications spanning solar cells, hydrogen energy systems, batteries, radiation shielding, biomedical technologies, display devices, optoelectronics, water purification, and photodetectors. High-quality research in astrophysics encompasses areas ranging from stellar astrophysics to cosmology, with focused studies in X-ray astronomy, galactic astrophysics, and investigations of the dark universe.

Faculty members have secured several external research grants from national funding agencies, including DST, DST-FIST, SERB, ISRO, BRNS, and SPARC, enabling the establishment of high-quality research infrastructure in cutting-edge domains. The Department houses a state-of-the-art Central Instrumentation Facility that supports energy and environmental research, thin-film growth, and nanomaterial synthesis. Advanced facilities such as X-ray diffractometers, electron microscopy, UV–Visible spectrometers, fluorometers, microwave synthesizers, solar simulators, and high-performance computational resources play a pivotal role in sustaining an excellent research culture.

The Department is further strengthened by its two Centres of Excellence, namely the Centre for Excellence in Astronomy and Astrophysics and the Centre for Advanced Materials Research, Innovation and Technology. These Centres function as dedicated hubs for advanced research, interdisciplinary collaboration, and innovation-driven academic activities. They facilitate focused research initiatives, promote national and international collaborations, and actively engage faculty members, research scholars, and students in cutting-edge research, thereby enhancing the Department’s research ecosystem and academic impact.
The Department maintains strong academic interactions with institutes, universities, and organizations within India and abroad through established collaborations, associateships, and Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs). Faculty members of the Department have published high-quality, high-impact research papers and patents in Scopus- and SCI-indexed journals, as well as other prestigious international publications. The Department regularly organizes expert talks, guest lectures, international, national, and regional conferences, quality improvement programmes on research and teaching themes, workshops, refresher courses, seminars, exhibitions, quiz programmes, Alumni talk and industry visits, thereby providing exposure to frontier developments in higher education and research.

The Department places strong emphasis on skill development and value addition through certificate programmes, interdisciplinary courses, internships, upskilling initiatives, and structured research programmes. Undergraduate and postgraduate students are actively involved in internal and externally funded research projects, including those supported by national fellowships, as an integral part of their curriculum. This comprehensive approach ensures a vibrant, research-oriented academic environment that equips students with both theoretical knowledge and practical competencies for future academic and professional pursuits.

“Department accentuates quality education with focus on research-inclusive learning, enabling students to find the best-suited possibilities for future careers.”
