Introduction

Holistic Education and Development (HED) guided by our vision- Excellence and Service- is an institutional commitment to realize our aspirations of achieving whole-person development and well-being. Holistic education was initiated as part of the strategic planning process in the late 90s of then Christ College and extended to Christ University, and has emerged as an evolutionarily rich best practice of the institution.  Initially, holistic education was launched to blend intellectual competence, academic and professional skills, creativity, and objectivity, realized through academic brilliance and regular day-to-day classroom interactions. As a best practice of our University, HED provides learning opportunities that foster the development of Christ University graduate attributes, especially within the domains of personal, interpersonal and societal skills. Personal development focuses on character honing, moral integrity, value consciousness, spiritual awareness, emotional poise, courage and conviction, communication skills, goal setting, and sportsmanship. The interpersonal domain aims to facilitate healthy interpersonal relationships between individuals, thereby creating a better society through teamwork, leadership skills, and empathy with a growing sensitivity towards social problems. HED has contributed significantly to developing societal skills, including sensitivity and responsibility towards the environment, sustainable development goals (SDGs) and global issues, commitment to preserving our rich cultural heritage and knowledge of the Indian constitution, and good citizenry.

The key vision of HED is to enable an individual to go beyond mere acquisition of knowledge, and transcend to higher meaning in life, human values and service to others. Holistic education aims to empower our faculty to reflect on and educate their students on the real purpose of education and the need for human values and integrity within our societies.  The process aims to take students through various dimensions of personal, interpersonal, and societal skills that contribute to the holistic development of an individual. The topics covered under the programme are an attempt to enrich the lives of both faculty and students of Christ University alike, to realise the institutional vision and mission to contribute effectively to a dynamic society.
