How DREAMS Work

The DREAMS acronym represents the cyclical model that guides participants through their journey of self-development:

  1. Desire is the first step, where external, extrinsic motivations ignite an intense fascination or attraction toward goals in life.

  2. Readiness follows, involving internalizing these goals and transforming extrinsic motivations into intrinsic goals.

  3. Empowerment equips participants with the psycho-social and leadership skills necessary for holistic growth.

  4. Action is the stage where participants take real steps towards their goals, building momentum through perseverance and effort.

  5. Mastery or excellence is the final stage, where sustained effort leads to success, and the cycle begins again as new, higher goals are set.

This three year long after-school program’s curriculum is designed for the Personal, Interpersonal, Leadership development of the adolescents and college students.  Around 40-45 underserved middle school kids are identified with the help of class teachers or school counselors. Similarly 30 college students (mentors) are also selected from the volunteers. Eight to ten senior adults (community volunteers) are identified and divided into five subgroups (D-R-E-A-M). In every subgroup eight Mentees, four college student mentors and minimum one Senior Adult mentor/s are grouped to achieve a 8:4:1 mentoring ratio. The program is delivered through group (entire cohort and subgroups) and personal interventions/mentoring through its eight days of physical camps (five days of Summer Camp and three days of one day Follow Up sessions in each quarter) with games, music, theater, storytelling etc. The virtual monthly interventions are incorporated in the subgroups based on the capstone projects identified by each of the subgroups. The program topics, activities and outcomes are clearly articulated and achieved through its well designed curriculum, workbooks and training manuals.

Trainers’ Training  (Young Community Leaders Program)

The college student mentors are trained by Young Community Leaders Program (YCLP) offered as a value-added course by Christ University with two credits every year for four years. The YCLP course enhances leadership, mentoring, and coaching abilities of mentors, which is facilitated by the senior adults from community, and professionals from corporates as part of their CSR (corporate social responsibility). Through this course the college student mentors will learn about the DREAMS community intervention model and receive training on how to create and carry out an action plan to significantly and effectively improve the lives of their mentees.
